Generative AI Expansion is an advanced feature that extends images using artificial intelligence, ensuring a balanced and professional composition. Generative Fill is especially useful when a subject is too close to the border, while Plain Background Expansion works best when there is ample space around the subject. These features are ideal for banners, marketing materials, and other design projects.

These expansion features have now been added to Headless Crop, Body-Aware Crop, Headshot Fix, and Volume Photos automations, improving the overall image output quality.

Use Case Example

When a user selects a 16:9 aspect ratio output, but after cropping, the image results in a 5:4 aspect ratio, the generated output will include white padding on both sides. In such cases:

  • A zoomed-in variant of the image is generated.

  • However, the zoomed-in image may not always yield a satisfactory result.

  • If Generative Fill or Plain Fill is enabled, the system will:

    • Generate a Generative Fill variant if Generative Fill is selected.

    • Generate a Plain Fill variant if Plain Fill is selected.

  • This ensures a more visually appealing and natural expansion of the image.

Generative Fill

Generative Fill extends images when a subject is too close to the border by analyzing existing elements and generating seamless extensions.

Key Features

  • Automatically extends image edges for better framing.

  • Uses AI to blend new elements naturally with the existing background.

  • Allows optional prompts for customization to achieve specific extensions. You can guide the AI by describing how you want the background extended. For example:

    • "Extend beach background with more sand and waves" for a realistic beach extension.

    • "Continue the forest with dense green trees" to maintain a natural flow.

    • "Add more sky with soft clouds" for a seamless sky extension.

Providing a clear and descriptive prompt helps the AI generate more accurate and visually appealing results.

For some tips on how to write effective prompts, refer this article.

When to Use Generative Fill

  • You want a natural extension that blends seamlessly with the existing image.

  • The subject is too close to the edge, and you need additional space.

Plain Background Expansion

Plain Background Expansion is designed for images with simple, uniform backgrounds. It ensures that AI-generated expansions appear smooth and natural.

Key Features

  • Optimized for extending plain or minimalistic backgrounds.

  • Maintains a clean and consistent background for a natural look.

  • Works best when there is ample space around the subject for smooth blending.

When to Use Plain Background Expansion?

  • The image has a plain, uniform background without complex elements.

  • You need to extend the background while maintaining a smooth, consistent look.

  • There is enough space around the subject to ensure seamless blending.

  • Avoid using when the subject is too close to the edge, as it may not blend well.

Limitations and Known Issues 🤧

  1. Transparent Background Processing: Images with transparent backgrounds may generate unnecessary white padding variants, leading to redundant processing and extra outputs. We recommend avoiding the use of Generative Fill on images with transparent backgrounds.

  2. Zoom-In Variant Head Cropping: The zoom-in algorithm may sometimes crop portraits incorrectly, cutting off parts of subjects’ heads—especially in headshots and group photos. A fix is on the way! In the meantime, feel free to reach out to our support team if you need assistance.

  3. Generative Fill Limitations: The system struggles to create Generative Fill variants when the required fill area exceeds 500px, resulting in incomplete or missing fills. We’re actively working on this and will address it in upcoming releases.
